Alcatraz
Part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Alcatraz is one of San Francisco's most fascinating attractions. Ride the ferry from Pier 33 across San Francisco Bay to Alcatraz Island, a historic landmark and once the most dreaded federal penitentiary in the country. Site of the first lighthouse on the West Coast and a former Civil War fort, Alcatraz Island once caged the nation's most notorious criminals and mobsters, including Al Capone. Alcatraz offers self-guided walking tours, a cell house audio tour and an evening tour with live narration. See videos and exhibits that highlight the island's cultural and natural history, or discover the island's beautiful gardens, tide pools, bird colonies and breathtaking views of San Francisco Bay.Details
